Red Valley (Kızılçukur): Cappadocia's Best Sunset Trail

Red Valley, or Kızılçukur in Turkish, takes its name from the deep red and pink hues of its volcanic rock, colors that become absolutely breathtaking as the sun sinks toward the horizon. Iron-rich layers in the tuff catch the low light and seem to glow from within, which is why this is widely considered the single best place to watch sunset in all of Cappadocia.

The valley is more than a viewpoint. Towering rock walls, narrow passages, hidden cave churches, and vineyards tucked between the formations make the walk through it genuinely memorable. A small family-run vineyard cafe along the trail serves fresh grape juice, wine, and tea, one of the region's most atmospheric refreshment stops.

Because Red Valley connects seamlessly to neighboring Rose Valley, it is possible to hike both in a single 3–4 hour adventure. The trail itself is short, around 2.5 km, and rated easy to moderate, making it accessible for most first-time visitors who simply want to experience the glow of the rocks at golden hour.

The most common starting point is the village of Çavuşin, which is reachable by dolmuş (shared minibus) from Göreme. From Çavuşin you walk into Red Valley and continue toward the vineyard cafe at the heart of the trail.

Alternatively, you can begin at the trailhead near the Red Valley viewpoint, which is reachable by taxi or on foot from Göreme. Many hikers arrange a taxi to pick them up at the end point so they do not have to retrace their steps, especially if they finish after dark following sunset.

Sunset is unquestionably the best time, and you should aim to arrive about an hour before the sun goes down. This gives you time to find a good vantage point and to watch the rock colors shift minute by minute as the light deepens from orange to red to pink.

Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable hiking temperatures and clear skies. In summer, start later in the day to avoid the midday heat, and in winter check conditions before setting out, as the trail can be muddy or icy after rain or snow.

The valley's signature feature is its red and pink rock walls, which surround you at eye level rather than being viewed from above. Hidden along the trail are several cave churches carved into the soft tuff, remnants of the region's early Christian past.

The vineyard cafe is a highlight in itself. Sitting among the grapevines with red rock walls rising on all sides, sipping fresh juice or wine, is one of Cappadocia's most authentic experiences. Bring cash, as card payment is not available at this remote stand.

Red Valley and Rose Valley sit side by side and share connecting trails, so most experienced hikers combine the two. A popular route starts in Red Valley from Çavuşin, passes the vineyard cafe, then continues into Rose Valley, finishing near Göreme.

The combined loop takes roughly 3–4 hours and is considered the finest valley hike in Cappadocia. Rose Valley earns its name from softer pink tones, while Red Valley delivers the deeper, more dramatic reds, so doing both gives you the full spectrum of the region's painted rock.

Wear proper walking shoes, as the trail includes uneven ground, loose gravel, and a few narrow sections. Carry plenty of water, sun protection, and a headlamp or phone light if you plan to stay through sunset and walk back afterward.

Download an offline map or hike with a guide, since signage inside the valleys is limited and it is easy to take a wrong turn among the many side paths. Arriving early also helps you secure a quiet spot before the crowds gather for the evening light.
