Pigeon Valley, Cappadocia: The Uçhisar to Göreme Hike

Pigeon Valley, or Güvercinlik Vadisi in Turkish, is one of Cappadocia's most beautiful and accessible hiking trails. It runs between the hilltop village of Uçhisar and the town of Göreme, winding through soft tuff cliffs riddled with countless dovecotes. The name comes from these pigeon houses, carved into the rock by locals over centuries to collect pigeon droppings, which were prized as a natural fertilizer for the region's vineyards and orchards.

The trail is roughly 4 km long and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours at a comfortable pace. Because the path runs mostly downhill from Uçhisar toward Göreme, most walkers choose that direction for an easier hike. Along the way you pass dramatic rock formations, fairy chimney views, and several small rock-cut churches tucked into the valley walls.

Midway along the route stands the Evil Eye Tree (Nazar Ağacı), a small tree hung with hundreds of blue glass evil-eye charms. It is one of Cappadocia's most photographed spots and a natural rest point before you continue down into Göreme.

Pigeon Valley connects Uçhisar and Göreme, and you can start the hike from either end. The most popular approach is to begin at the top in Uçhisar — often combined with a visit to Uçhisar Castle — and walk downhill to Göreme, since this direction is gentler on the legs.

Both towns are only a few kilometres apart, so reaching the trailhead is easy. From Göreme you can walk up, take a short taxi ride, or use the local dolmuş (minibus) to Uçhisar, then hike back down. If you start in Göreme, the lower trailhead sits near the edge of town and is signposted toward the valley.

The valley's signature sight is the cliff faces honeycombed with pigeon houses, many painted with simple white or ochre decorations to attract the birds. As you walk you'll also pass fairy chimneys, narrow rock corridors, and several small rock-cut churches carved by early Christian communities.

The highlight for most visitors is the Evil Eye Tree, draped in hundreds of blue glass nazar beads — it's roughly midway along the trail and impossible to miss. Near the Uçhisar end, the panoramic viewpoint by the castle offers one of the widest vistas in Cappadocia.

The classic outing pairs the hike with Uçhisar Castle, the tall rock fortress that crowns the village and is the highest point in the area. Start at the castle for sweeping panoramic views over the valleys, then descend into Pigeon Valley and follow the trail down to Göreme.

This combined route takes around three hours in total, including time at the castle and stops for photos. It's the most popular way to experience the valley and rewards you with both the big-picture panorama from above and the intimate cliff scenery from within.

There are no shops, cafés, or toilets along the trail itself, so bring water and a snack before you set off — especially in summer when the valley gets hot and exposed. Sturdy shoes help on the dusty, occasionally uneven sections.

Early morning is the best time to walk: the light is soft for photos, the air is cooler, and you may catch hot air balloons drifting overhead at sunrise. Late afternoon is a good second choice for golden light over the rock formations.
