How Far is Ürgüp from Other Popular Destinations in Cappadocia?
Ürgüp sits right in the heart of Cappadocia and makes one of the most convenient bases in the region: almost everything worth seeing is within a 10–60 minute drive. As a quick orientation, Göreme is about 10 km (15 min) away, Uçhisar roughly 7 km (10 min), Avanos around 10 km (15 min), the Kaymaklı underground city about 20 km (30 min) and Ihlara Valley some 60 km (1 hr 15 min). Below is the detail you need to plan day trips and choose where to stay.
Ürgüp is a historic wine town built into the tuff hillside, with good restaurants, a daily market and plenty of cave hotels. Because it is so central, many visitors use it as a hub and fan out to the valleys, villages and underground cities each day. For ideas on filling your itinerary, see our guide to the top 10 things to do in Cappadocia.
Ürgüp to Göreme — 10 km (about 15 minutes)
Göreme lies roughly 10 km northeast of Ürgüp and is the most popular village in Cappadocia, famous for its fairy chimneys, walking trails and the rock-cut churches of the Göreme Open-Air Museum (entrance €20). It is also the main launch zone for sunrise balloon flights. Getting there takes around 15 minutes by car, and a local dolmuş (minibus) runs the route regularly. Plan your visit around the frescoed chapels in our Cappadocia churches and heritage guide.
Ürgüp to Uçhisar — 7 km (about 10 minutes)
Uçhisar is the closest major sight, just 7 km south and about 10 minutes by car. Its centrepiece is Uçhisar Castle (entrance €9), a giant rock outcrop honeycombed with tunnels that is the highest point in Cappadocia. Climb to the top for a 360° panorama over the valleys — it is one of the best sunset spots in the region. From Uçhisar you can also walk down into Pigeon Valley toward Göreme.
Ürgüp to Avanos — 10 km (about 15 minutes)
Avanos sits about 10 km northwest of Ürgüp on the banks of the Kızılırmak (Red River) and is famous for its red-clay pottery, a craft passed down for generations. The drive takes around 15 minutes. Many workshops welcome visitors to watch artisans at the wheel and try shaping a pot yourself. Read more in our Avanos pottery tradition guide.
Ürgüp to Kaymaklı Underground City — 20 km (about 30 minutes)
Kaymaklı is roughly 20 km south of Ürgüp, a 30-minute drive. It is one of Cappadocia's most visited underground cities (entrance €13), with multiple levels of tunnels, stables, kitchens and ventilation shafts where early Christians sheltered. It pairs well with the deeper Derinkuyu city a little further south. Wear sturdy shoes — the passages are low and narrow in places. See our dedicated Kaymaklı underground city guide.
Ürgüp to Ihlara Valley — 60 km (about 1 hr 15 min)
Ihlara Valley is the longest trip on this list at around 60 km southwest, taking roughly an hour and a quarter by car (entrance €15). The 14 km canyon along the Melendiz stream is one of Cappadocia's finest hikes, lined with rock-cut churches and shaded by trees — a refreshing contrast to the open plateaus. Because of the distance it is usually combined with Derinkuyu and Selime Monastery as a full-day Green Tour. Plan the walk with our best hiking trails in Cappadocia guide.
